The Pacific Maritime Institute in partnership with Southern Towing Company has developed a new simulator based training program for Z-Drive propelled towboats. Southern Towboat Company, based in Memphis Tennessee, is the first operator to employ Z-drive towboats along the inland waterways. PMI and Captain Jeff Slesinger, Senior Towing Instructor, developed the new, simulator based training program for the company's towboat operators.
PMI was chosen as the prime training provider based on its extensive tractor & Z-Drive tugboat training experience and modeling capabilities. Captain Dickey Sides, Port Captain for Southern Towing, in conjunction with PMI developed the unique simulator training curriculum for Z-drive towboats handling barges along the Mississippi River as well as the Gulf of Mexico Intracoastal Waterways.
"The success of the program is attributed to the close working relationship PMI and Southern Towing developed during the preparation of the training program", said Gregg Trunnell, PMI's Director. "Our ability to deliver the course and accelerate the learning curve for their employees was an excellent experience for everyone. PMI developed the course for government and commercial customers, but they can also be customized to meet an organization's specific requirements."
