Senior Safety Engineer
Shell - Aberdeen, Scotland (United Kingdom)
Job Description
As one of our Safety Engineers, you'll be responsible for providing safety engineering expertise and guidance to a specific part of Exploration and Production Europe's operations, and work on functional initiatives that cover all areas of the organisation. Your skills and experience in the identification, assessment and management of major hazards mean you'll be involved in a range of activities across the business.
- Your principal role will be to ensure that facilities are designed and operated in a manner where the risks associated with major hazards has been reduced to a level which is as low as reasonably practicable. To do this, you'll need to work closely with a broad cross-section of the organisation including other discipline engineers, appraisal and development engineers, project teams, operations, engineering and maintenance teams.
- You'll manage the maintenance of the Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Cases and safety studies that support these Cases for one of the UK-based Assets and any future facilities. This will involve assessing the effect of engineering and operational changes through studies including HAZIDs/HAZOPs, fire and explosion analyses, and Quantitative Risk Analysis, etc. You'll also take the lead in identifying any measures that can be implemented to reduce the risks further.
- You will support the Safety Engineering Technical Authorities in ensuring that the safety engineering and hazard management standards are adhered to or that requested deviations to these standards are assessed.
- You'll have an important role in the facility integrity management systems, where, you'll be responsible for identifying the systems required to manage major hazards, defining the safety performance required from these systems and providing advice on what measures to take if the systems fail to deliver this performance.
- Although primarily involved in Exploration and Production Europe operations, we'll encourage you to use your skills and experience in the wider global organisation, and seek assistance from others within the group.
Responsible for defining and managing safety engineering activities performed by specialist consultants or contractors, you may also liaise with the regulator and industry groups on safety engineering issues.
Desired Skills & Experience
With a degree in engineering or science, it would be an advantage if you have a post-graduate qualification in safety engineering or hazard and risk management. Ideally, you'll have relevant safety engineering experience in the petrochemical industry, together with a thorough understanding of technologies and practices as they relate to oil and gas production facilities.
It's vital that you understand the requirements of effective hazard and risk management in a mature operating environment rather than a Greenfield project environment, and are keen to develop your career in this area. Self-motivation, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and a good customer focus are essential qualities, and you'll also need first-class written and verbal English skills.
